July 1914, World War I begins, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria has been assassinated. Archduke Ferdinand was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, on June 28 1914 both him and his wife were shot to death.

They were shot by Serbian nationalist, Serbian wanted to end the Austro-Hungarian rule over Herzegovina and Bosnia. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand his led to a war across Europe; this war being WW 1, officially starting in July 28, 1914.

Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire were on one side of the war and Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Canada, Japan and the United States were on the other. (Central Powers V.S Allied Powers).

New military technologies throughout this war and the horror of trench warfare brought about lots of destruction and chaos. By the end of WW1 in 1919 more than 16 million people (both soldiers and civilians), were dead.

On June 28, 1919 the Treaty of Versailles was signed at the Palace of Versailles outside Paris, France. This treaty only being one of several signed to officially end five years of fighting and conflict. Officially ending the WW1, also known as the Great War.
