On May 26, 1951 Sally Ride was born. Best known for as the first American woman to fly in space.

On June 19, 1983 Sally Ride became the first American woman to fly in space while working at NASA. She was stationed as a astronaut on a space shuttle with the mission and job to work the robotic arm on the shuttle. She would use the arm to help put satellites out into space.

Ride stopped working for NASA in 1987 and started teaching at the university of California in San Diego. Ride wanted to look for ways to help women and girls who wanted to study mathematics and science. She then came up with the idea EarthKAM for NASA.

This project allows middle school students to use a camera on the International Space Station and take pictures of earth. With these pictures they can study Earth.
